This month's pick!

Hello there,
Because we had to bring the Bookclub ahead a week it was a bit thin on the ground but lively discussion was had about last months book. Overall everyone enjoyed it and found it very interesting and unique read.

So onto this month's selection: The Dinner by Herman Koch

The author is from the Netherlands and you can read all the very different views on this book, there are many! here

If you would like a heads up on the questions and discussion we will have, you can read it here

Happy reading and see you on 30th May at 6pm!

Margaret

  1. I have just completed my reading of 'The Dinner' and agree with the critic who described it as ' an uncomfortable read.' Many aspects, from statements such as Paul's thoughts on organic farms, where animals lived in freedom until they were butchered, to the really important diclosures - such as his acts of violence and total lack of a moral code - made me squirm.
The structure of the novel is masterful. The plot revelations correspond in importance to the many courses of the restaurant meal during which they unfold.
koch very cleverly uses Paul as narrator but causes our allegiance to move from him to Serge as the plot unfolds and the characters are shown in their true light.
I am left with more questions asked than answered. e.g.
    What was the mood/neurological disorder?
    Was Serge Michel's biological father?
Were they all sociopaths, if not psychopaths?
Did Claire alone incite Michel to kill Beau?
I was reminded of some aspects of 'We need to talk about Kevin'. Has anyone else read that work? The book club has taken me outside my reading comfort zone, and I hope the June selection continues the trend.
I may have to go to Sydney again at the end of May, so may miss yet another meeting. Carole

  2. I am yet to start ,The Dinner but have read We Need To Talk About Kevin which I thought was great BUT also uncomfortable (and soooooo sad). I cannot make boojclub on the 30th but hope to catch up with you all in June. Any other interesting reads you recommend?

    1. Just finished The Dinner. I agree with Carole - I have more questions than answers from the book but don't think I am saying it was incomplete. I think it was well written with very clever disclosures throughout. I wonder whether the author was making a point about mental illness support / understanding or lack of within society. My blood boiled when Claire said she knew Paul had stopped taking his medication and was glad to have the old Paul back!!!! The end was a little extreme but probably justified. It will be a great discussion, no doubt about it. Top Pick Margaret.
