Between the Lines is a way for us to provide a book club that doesn’t require face-to-face meetings. Lots of us live out increasingly more of our lives online, so why not interact with each other and discuss what we’re reading online, too?
I have finished both the September selections as I was sick for a couple of days and couldn't do much apart from read. I really loved Bush Oranges as I found it so nostalgic. I haven't heard a bed jacket called a 'hug-me-tight' since I was a very young child, and I enjoyed the familiarity of the setting- the Magnetic Island ferry, the island itself, Castle Hill, the Causeway, the Strand etc. The structure was a clever vehicle for allowing many different perspectives, and although it was a book of strong women,Dan, Doug and Vic also emerged from the pages as real people. I like a book to be character driven, and for issues to be dealt with through the characters, whereas I do not enjoy plot driven novels as much. I hope you all enjoy reading the novel as much as I did.
What a special book 'Painter of Silence'proved to be on so many levels. I appreciated the orgiginality of so many aspects of Harding's writing. War and politics are such common themes in novels, but the author in this case managed to present her viewpoint so softly through Tinu, Safta and the other characters that we were gently positioned to agree with her without noticing. I regret that I will have to miss the discussion, but look forward to October's selections. Carole
